Under its powers and duties established in § 177.09 of the City Code, the Allentown Environmental Advisory Council (EAC) may research environmental issues and make recommendations to City Council, the Mayor, and other boards or commissions on matters affecting the City’s natural resources. These recommendations help the EAC fulfill its purpose of promoting the responsible stewardship of Allentown’s environment and supporting informed, science-based decision-making at the municipal level.
The purpose of the EAC is to advise the City on matters related to environmental protection and sustainability, but also to promote community programs. Drafting letters of support for initiatives or grant applications that align with these goals helps the EAC advance its mission by encouraging projects that promote resource conservation, green infrastructure, and community environmental improvement.
In June of 2010 the City Council passed Ordinance No. 14800 requiring annual reports and long-term strategies to be completed and reported to City Council and the Mayor from certain Authorities, Boards, and Commissions in the City of Allentown. The report shall also be presented to Allentown City Council at a public meeting. Read more here: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1ag7HOWEdMQ03P4aCQ-NIyRtppsBzxQG8/view?usp=sharing
The EAC has cultivated a strong relationship with Muhlenberg College, the only higher education institution located entirely within the City of Allentown. Through Muhlenberg’s Office of Community Engagement internship program, the EAC has received valuable assistance from students on a range of projects related to community engagement and environmental research in support of its mission. Interns often conclude their term by presenting a final report to City Council, sharing their findings and recommendations.
In accordance with its powers and duties outlined in §177.09 of the City Code, the EAC reviews proposed land development and subdivision plans referred by the Allentown City Planning Commission (ACPC). These reviews allow the EAC to provide comments and recommendations that promote sustainable site design, stormwater management, native landscaping, and the protection of natural resources. By contributing environmental perspectives early in the planning process, the EAC helps ensure that development within the City supports long-term ecological health and aligns with Allentown’s broader sustainability goals.
