ALLEN BOOK AWRD SCHOLARSHIP DESCRIPTION
In response to cultural prejudice, the scholarship offers LGBTQ+ students the opportunity to counter the bias through the arts for greater social justice in Greater Hartford.
The scholarship empowers students to "write a wrong" and compete to receive funds to support their continuing education.
Application Purpose: To offer high school seniors, who are compelled by personal experience, family experience, and or a cultural experience, to create and share art that expresses the challenges and/or opportunities of members of the LGBTQ community; to identify strong voices that uniquely "write a wrong" for social justice; and, to identify (two) students committed to advancing their impact by attending a two- or four-year college or university in the Fall 2020 semester as a full-time student.
Scholarship Reward: Two individuals selected from the pool of applicants will be awarded scholarships for financial assistance during the 2020-21 academic year of $1,000.
Qualifications: Interested candidates must meet the following criteria to qualify for this award:
- Graduated high school senior before Fall 2020;
- Have applied to a two- or four-year college or university;
- Submitted original art*:
(1) for an LGBTQ+ issue that, in the applicant's view, needs attention and voice;
(2) that proposes in some way a social justice impact in one's local community;
- Submitted an artist statement of artistic intent, no longer than 200 words that offers additional insight about the art for the committee.
- Candidate or a representative of the candidate (preferably a family member local to Hartford) must be available to receive the award in person at Allen Foundation's Signature Event.
*Art submissions will be on public display, at least, at: the Allen Book Award Scholarship website and the Allen Book Award Scholarship Facebook page; they may appear on other digital platforms; journals, educational conferences; and/or community discussions. As a result, the applicant gives permission of publication to the Allen Book Award Scholarship and will decide whether their name appears with the work.
*The artistic form is entirely subject to the applicant's content and choice.
