6. How do I paint my garage doors? My window shutters?
Garage doors: first wash them with a mild detergent, scrub off any oil or dirt with a scrub brush, then scrape off any peeling paint. Rinse off and let dry completely. Paint: ask your local paint retailer for which type of paint they recommend. If you have bare metal showing, you may need to prime first. If not, you can likely just paint a topcoat. Most people either try to match their siding, trim color or shutter color. You will want to tape off anything you don't want paint on and lay down a drop cloth. For tools, a low-nap small roller is recommended as well as a quality brush to cut in the edges and around windows if your doors have them. You will also want a roller tray (a liner makes cleanup easier). Plan to paint two coats, and paint in the morning or evening, not in direct sun or during extremely hot or cold weather (check paint for recommended temperature ranges.) Some find it easier to work on a ladder where the door pulls away from the garage door weatherstripping to minimize taping. You will want to roll as much of the door as possible. Allow to dry, then paint a second coat. Stand back and admire your work and accept your neighbors' appreciation for a nice garage door!
Window Shutters: The easiest way to paint them is to carefully climb on a ladder and remove them from your home. They are typically attached to the siding with plastic clips. Gently pry them out with a putty knife. Supplies: water/hose, soft scrub brush, gentle household soap, spray paint suitable for plastic (paint & primer in one best - Home Depot sells this), maybe sawhorses or a table, if you have. Set up a drop cloth on the ground or over your sawhorses/table - use a spacer to keep the shutters up slightly from the ground or table to make it easier and to keep a clean side edge. Clean the shutters with mild soapy water and scrub brush, rinse and allow to dry completely. Using light overlapping coats, paint the shutters with the spray paint. Allow to dry then paint a second coat. Allow to dry and reinstall on your home using the existing clips.
Alternatively: pay a contractor to do both, especially if you're more skilled at writing checks than DIY.
7. How do I contact the Board/Homeowners' Association if I have a question?
The best and really only way to contact the volunteer board is via email. This way, as the Board changes, you will always be in contact with the correct person. alleghenygrove@gmail.com
