Research Project: Tropical Groove - Paikian Audiovisualities in Brazilian Technoculture.
This research project investigates Paikian audiovisualities in contemporary Brazilian technoculture, understood as relations among image, sound, technique, body, duration, and perception, structured by five recurring dynamics identified in Nam June Paik’s work: circuit, interference, repetition, intermedial contagion, and multiple temporalities. The corpus comprises selected works by Gilbertto Prado, Giselle Beiguelman, Eder Santos, and Letícia Ramos. Taking Paik’s Random Access (1963) as a heuristic principle, the project develops a nonlinear investigation of these works by organizing them into four operative constellations: Circuit, Mediation, and Feedback; Failure, Ruin, and Technical Afterlife; Repetition, Modulation, and Device; and Material Processes, Deviation, and Interruption. The research develops Tropical Groove as a concept that describes the situated actualization of Paikian audiovisualities within Brazilian technoculture. Rather than tracing relationships of artistic influence, it constructs a comparative framework for understanding how recurring audiovisual problems are transformed under distinct technical, material, historical, and cultural conditions.
