'Oh deary me, where on earth am I?!' thought Mr. Rabbit to himself as he ran through the tall grass in front of him. 'This grass field is never-ending and I need to find my rabbit hole.' As he finally emerged from the grass he spotted two girls reading. One looked really familiar, but he could not quite place where he recognized her from. The Rabbit pulled out his pocket watch, which told him if people had access to Wonderland instead of telling time. The watch showed that a human nearby did in fact have the ability to travel to his homeland. His pocket watch did not narrow down which girl it was, but he knew that only one would be able to see or hear him.
'I wonder if I can get the girl to follow me... She might be able to help us make peace in Wonderland,' Mr. Rabbit thought as he quietly devised a plan of action.
He looked up to see the blonde girl in a blue dress staring directly at him. "Oh no! I am going to be so terribly late!" he shouted in distress. He turned and hurried in the direction containing his rabbit hole, he hoped. After making it past the tree line he turned his head to see if the girl was following. She was running after him and shouting something the Rabbit could not make out. Seeing her at a closer glance made the Rabbit remember where he had seen the girl before. 'That's Alice!' he thought as she was approaching. He started checking the tree trunks to find the hole and after quite a few tries he was successful. Alice was getting really close at this point, so to ensure she would follow him down he shouted, "I cannot possibly make it on time at this rate!" and with that, he dove into the rabbit hole.
He was familiar with the dark tunnel and knew that the ending would leave him hanging with his head towards the ground, so he flipped his body upside down to save himself the trouble at the end of his fall. Mr. Rabbit ran to the end of the tunnel and encountered his good old friend, Mr. Entrance. He was a door not much taller than the Rabbit who stood in between Wonderland and the rabbit hole hallway.
"Hello Rabbit! Any plans for this evening?" asked Mr. Entrance.
"Actually I have recently encountered someone who I think can help us get Wonderland back to the way it was! I need your help to get her through though!" exclaimed Mr. Rabbit.
"Okay, who is she and what can I do?" asked Mr. Entrance.
"I need you to make her drink two separate drinks that will change her size so she will believe in Wonderland's magic. Also, keep her interested in figuring out where I am going so she will follow me to meet the White Queen!" said Mr. Rabbit. It was not long after he finished his sentence that he heard Alice scream as she jumped down the hole.
"Here she comes! You can do this, Entrance! Make sure to hide yourself among the other doors to give me more time," Mr. Rabbit encouraged the door. He snapped his fingers and a table appeared with two vials that said 'try me.' With a smile, he went through Mr. Entrance and watched through the peephole as Alice approached with a confused look on her face.
There were over fifty doors lined up among Mr. Entrance. Alice tried to open a few, but realized they were all locked. 'What is the point in having all of these doors if you cannot open any?' Alice thought to herself.
Mr. Rabbit watched her for a couple of minutes, but then whispered to Entrance to begin his part and he was off to find the White Queen.
"Excuse me, Miss, are you looking for the Rabbit?" asked Entrance.
Alice was so shocked to find a door talking to her. "Why yes I am, but how are you talking?!" exclaimed Alice.
"I am a special door because after you pass over my threshold, you will end up in Wonderland," said Entrance. "If you want to come through and see exactly where Rabbit was off to, you will have to drink the vial on the right. We don't believe in keys here so you need to be small enough to fit through my keyhole."
Alice thought over his request because she knew better than to take a drink offered by a stranger. She figured a talking door had no reason to cause her harm and picked up the drink. Not long after taking her first sip she started growing! She was really confused because in order to fit through the door she needed to shrink. Entrance made her grab the wrong drink on purpose so she would be forced to drink from both vials like the Rabbit wanted.
"How can I fit through you now?" questioned Alice while holding back tears. "I am too big to fit through the tunnel which I fell through, so there is no way out."
"Don't be upset! Just drink more of the other vial and you will become shorter than your original height!" exclaimed Entrance.
'Should I still trust the door?' Alice thought to herself. 'I'm not left with much choice at this point.' She gulped down the second drink and let out a small scream as she became ten times smaller in a matter of seconds.
'Now that I am small enough to fit, how do I reach the opening?' shouted Alice so Entrance could hear her.
"Oh! I did not even think about that! Use the ribbon from the vial to throw up here and I will catch it with my mouth so you can climb up," suggested Entrance.
Alice hurriedly untied the rope and made a knot at the end to give it some weight. It only took two tries to get the rope into Entrance's mouth. She climbed up and let go of the rope when she reached the keyhole.
"Well, what do you think?" asked Entrance.
Alice could not answer the door because she was dumbfounded by beauty and curiosity. Even though she didn't know it yet, Alice had just faced her first challenge on this wonderful adventure through Wonderland.
Author's Notes: In Alice's Adventures in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll, the story begins with Alice and her sister spending time by a river bank when Alice is complaining of being bored. She sees a Rabbit dressed in clothes and hears him say that he is going to be late. Naturally, she follows the talking rabbit away from her sister and into a rabbit hole. She ends up in a hallway full of doors and finds a key that does not fit any of the locks. She also discovers a bottle that has a tag with the words 'drink me' on it. A lot of the characters in Carroll's story are fun, but are quite confusing. Alice is the only 'normal' character that holds a big part. In my version, I kept the characteristics and actions of Alice the same, but I showed the story through the Rabbit's eyes. Alice still followed Mr. Rabbit into the hole, but the reader was able to see how the confusing scene was set up and the reason behind the drinks and hiding Mr. Entrance. In the original story, Mr. Rabbit continuously checked his pocket watch before announcing he was late, so I wanted to give the watch a larger meaning in my version. I portrayed the Rabbit as less frantic in my story and he had an obvious goal. In Carroll's story, Alice is able to go through the door because she cried when she was 'big' after drinking one vial and flooded the room with the doors in it, so when she became small again she went through the door's mouth on a leaf.
