Mentoring students in research has been a central part of my work. At Norwich University I supervised senior design teams, international officer-cadet interns and summer research fellows, and several of my students became co-authors of peer-reviewed papers.
Students who are interested in applied research in artificial intelligence (AI) or cybersecurity are welcome to email me with a short description of their interests.
Undergraduate students I mentored are co-authors on journal articles in Electronics (2023), BioMedInformatics (2024) and Frontiers in Artificial Intelligence (2025), and on four papers at the American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE) Annual Conference and the First-Year Engineering Experience (FYEE) Conference (2024 to 2026). Publications
"Throwing Artificial Intelligence at Critical Infrastructure Security and Seeing What Sticks", Academic Symposium on Cybersecurity, Emerging Networks, and Technologies (ASCENT) 2024, Virginia Tech, Blacksburg, Virginia.
"Deep Learning Approach for Securing ASIC Chips", Cybersecurity Research in Undergraduate Programs (CyRUP) 2024, Norwich University.
"Email Spam Detection Based on AI", Cybersecurity Research in Undergraduate Programs (CyRUP) 2024, Norwich University.
"Redefining the Future of Brain Tumor Diagnosis with Artificial Intelligence", National Conference on Undergraduate Research (NCUR) 2024, Long Beach, California.
Smart Navigation: AI for Visually Impaired Users (2025), a wearable assistive device combining object detection, text recognition and ultrasonic obstacle sensing.

Internships for officer-cadets of the École Spéciale Militaire de Saint-Cyr, France, hosted by the Norwich University AI Center and co-supervised with Dr. Jacques Beneat:
AI-based detection of people in video from a small drone (fall 2023).
Machine learning for detecting hardware Trojans in field-programmable gate array (FPGA) and application-specific integrated circuit (ASIC) designs (fall 2024).
Engineering and AI research projects with a third cohort of Saint-Cyr cadets (spring 2026). News story
Directed the AI Center's student internship and summer fellowship program. Projects in summer 2025 included object detection for autonomous vehicles in adverse weather, artificial intelligence for flagging fraudulent transactions, solar energy forecasting, and an educational module on AI-based sepsis prediction for nursing students, prepared with nursing faculty.
Faculty Mentor for a 2025 summer undergraduate project, funded by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) through the Vermont Space Grant Consortium, on recurrent neural networks for predicting the remaining useful life of turbofan engines.
Academic advisor to undergraduate engineering students, and faculty advisor to the IEEE student club and the AI Club at Norwich University.
