For the second week of this show reel project, I teamed up with another 3D modeler, Kyle Williams, and we came up with the idea of creating a small scene that represents our former childhood. This consisted of playing video games on a really old console on the floor. The things we wanted to implement in this scene was picture frames, PS1 console, CD holders and CDs, TV and a controller.
Making these picture frames was pretty simple however I ran into issues when applying the pictures as I had to make the frame fit the picture so that there was no overlapping. To stop the picture going around the edge/frame I made sure that I only had the faces selected when I dragged the image on.
For the posters we wanted some bands of that era as that would suit best with our retro theme. So after some digging I thought that ACDC and Nirvana would be best.
The PS1 was a lot harder then I expected mainly due to getting the disk tray lip that goes around. This took me a couple times to figure out on how to attack this model as I wanted the topology to be neat. In the end I decided that adding a cylinder to the box was the best because if I had used Regularizer I would of had to added loads of swift loops so that it makes an accurate circle. Unfortunately, this meant that I would have to line the edge of the box up to the cylinder so that I didn't have any glitches happening when I lower the cylinder in to the correct position. After that everything was pretty simple. Now because we was having a controller plugged in to the playsation we realised that there was no point in modeling both sides to the ports as one wouldn't be seen. Once this was finished all I had to do was add some text to the model so that it looks the same as the IRL version. Although, we didn't add the PS1 logo or Sony text as we wasn't sure on copyright issues.
Feedback
Above is the final render of our scene and the feedback we got on this retro themed project was overall pretty positive. Something to keep in mind when reading this feedback is that they also had access to the 3DS MAX file so they could look around and inspect which is why there's a comment addressing the back of the PS1 saying that "it could have more detail". Overall I feel pretty neutral on my behalf as I struggled a lot with the modelling of the PS1 but its a good learning curve and definitely pushed me out of my comfort zone.
