For the duration of my internship, I interned with Bethany Pointe Health Campus to learn various positions and how they all work cohesively within a skilled nursing facility.
Throughout the duration of my internship, I primarily worked with the Sales Department to increase census and follow the strategic plan. Some of my responsibilities included:
a. Working closely with the Director of Sales to create and meet target census goals in all service lines.
b. Promote the campus by networking with other healthcare professionals (case management, Admissions Directors, physicians, and providers) to gain referrals to meet census.
c. Documented all relations with potential customers in the customer relationship management system.
d. Clinically reviewed hospital referrals and made acceptance decisions to admit patients to the building based on "Green Light Thinking" guidelines to ensure patients were a fit for facility.
Throughout this internship process I was able to gain and develop skills to assist me in my healthcare management journey; the following skills I was able to develop during my time in my internship:
a. Dementia Training: Being able to meet with residents where they are neurologically can play a crucial role in being able to connect with them. This also allows us as providers to be able to work with the patients better to build trust with them as well.
b. Customer Service: This skill has allowed me to work with potential customers and also build connections with them to help them find the services they need. It also allows me to get to know my patients better so we are able to build better relationships.
c. Marketing: Marketing skills are able to help me advertise our building so we are gain more referrals to assist with meeting target goals set by the company. We also will be able to have a better working relationship with our consumers to help us find services they need.
My biggest contribution during the development of skills was pushing forward with the development. In the beginning it was hard to talk to people about the services we offer, what it could do for their loved one, and how much of an impact it has on them. I was provided with the education, training, and perseverance to continue growing within this position to personalize the tour expierence, communicate effectively on eligability of admission, and provide customers with the care they deserve. Overall not giving up and sticking with the training even when it was hard was my biggest success.
Currently, I struggle with communicating with my internal team regarding admissions. Because of this, I have felt less confident on speaking about what the Sales team has coming up. I have been working with my supervisor to become more confident by clarifying potential questions regarding admission, ensuring I have created a list of activities of the Sales Department to discuss in meetings, and slowing down the admission process to ensure I have enough time to communicate admissions to the internal team.
During the course of the next 6 months, I will be beginning my masters degree in Business Administration to help me gain skills to effectively run a business. I will also be applying to opportunities in the Fort Worth - Dallas, Texas area to prepare me to move. I hope to obtain a position in an AIT or corporte position focusing on operations, compliance, or human resources.
