My name is Alexandra Newman, and I live in Barrie, Ontario, Canada. I have an Honours Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology through York University; during my undergraduate studies I also completed a certification in Rehabilitation Services through a condensed, concurrent program with Seneca College.
I am a Registered Psychotherapist, and currently I work as a Community Mental Health Counsellor. I provide short-term, community based mental health and addiction services to the most vulnerable individuals, with the aim to reduce the need for multiple visits to emergency departments. I am affiliated with the emergency department at our partner hospital, and much of my referrals come from their crisis services. My specialisation is in counselling individuals with concurrent disorders, or individuals who are experiencing both mental health and substance use concerns. I have over 10 years experience as a counsellor; the bulk of my professional experience has been supporting individuals with whom it has traditionally been challenging to engage, such as through street outreach, counselling within opioid substitution therapies, or counselling in mental health and justice programs.
I have recently decided to pursue a Master of Health Studies through Athabasca University to explore leadership opportunities within healthcare, with a particular focus on the mental health and substance use domains – which are my passion. I hope to build on the experience I have gained through providing direct service to individuals by shifting towards planning and policy development, to ensure these unique health care needs continue to be met through responsible and effective leadership.
Outside of work, I strive for balance in my own life by incorporating good self-care practices that include exercise and meaningful connection with family and friends. I am active in my hobbies, which include kettlebell strength training, running, and roller derby. Mindfulness and meditation practices support my goal in incorporating both kind and reflective self-care. I live with my husband, and our beloved (and very spoiled) pets.
