Lesson Plan 1: Describing Sports
Warmer (10 minutes)
The teacher will ask her students to stand up and perform some simple warm-up exercises related to TPR (total physical response): Stretching, jumping and jogging in place according to some instructions. The teacher will model the activity.
"Stretch like a gymnast!"
“Jump like a basketball player!"
“Swim like a swimmer!”
“Jog like a runner!”
Web (15 minutes)
The teacher will first introduce the topic of sports and ask the students to brainstorm different sports they know. The teacher will write their suggestions on the board.
Then, the teacher will share the webpages "SI Kids" and “Rookieroad" with the students and guide them to explore the website in small groups. She will instruct them to find information about different sports (one per group) and COMPLETE THE CHART online.
Finally, the teacher will provide each student with a printed worksheet from the British Council's "Sports | LearnEnglish Kids" website. Students will have to complete the worksheet by matching the sports with their descriptions.
What's Next (25 minutes)
The teacher will gather the students and discuss the sports they found on the website. She will encourage them to share their findings and describe the sports they researched.
The students will be divided into pairs or small groups of three. The teacher will provide each group with a set of cards with pictures representing different sports (the cards will contain images from the British Council worksheet). She will Instruct the students to take turns describing a card to their partner or group using adjectives, action verbs, and any relevant vocabulary they have learned.
To practice writing skills, the teacher will ask the students to choose one sport and Complete the following sentences describing it. They can use the information they found on the website and their own knowledge. They will be monitored and assisted by the teacher.
Homework: “Create a poster or collage about your favourite sport. Include pictures, labels, and descriptive words related to the sport.”
Lesson Plan 2: Creating a Sports Brochure
Warmer (10 minutes)
The teacher will display a few sports-related objects (realia) such as a basketball, tennis racket, or soccer ball. She will ask the students to name the objects and describe how they are used in the corresponding sports.
Web (15 minutes)
The teacher will introduce the topic of creating a sports brochure. She will explain that a brochure is a promotional tool that provides information about a particular topic. She will share examples of sports brochures with the students, either printed or through a visual presentation.
2. Then, the teacher will ask the students to use the Cambridge Dictionary website “badminton | traducir al español - Cambridge Dictionary” and the Visual Dictionary “SPORTS & GAMES: AQUATIC AND NAUTICAL SPORTS images - Visual Dictionary Online” to look up specific vocabulary words and pictures related to sports, such as "badminton." They should write down the definitions and any additional information they find.
What's Next (25 minutes)
The teacher will show the students a printed version of some steps for creating brochures from the website: "3 Ways to Make a Brochure for a School Project - wikiHow" She will discuss the steps involved in creating a brochure, including layout, content, and design together with the students so as to scaffold the reading and discussion.
2. Then, she will provide each student with a printed version of the worksheet En.islcollective - Sports for them to work on individually or in pairs. They will have to match the sports with the correct descriptions.
3. The students will be divided into small groups and each group will be assigned a different sport. In their groups, students should collaborate to create a sports brochure for their assigned sport. They can use the information from the worksheet, their prior knowledge, and the websites as references. The teacher will encourage them to include descriptive language, images, and interesting facts about the sport.
Closure: Each group will present their sports brochures to the class. Their classmates can ask questions about the different sports. The teacher will give them feedback, highlighting the students' efforts and commenting on their language use and creativity.
