On November 29, 2025, 11 dedicated volunteers came together to plant 11 native tree seedlings in front of Aldan Elementary School. Our hearts are full knowing these trees will grow alongside the children, providing shade for play, cleaner air to breathe, and a living classroom for learning about nature.
These native species—Swamp White Oak, Red Oak, Sycamore, Black Gum, Sweet Bay Magnolia, Musclewood, Hop Hornbeam and the biggest one (for now) Service Berry—will become important landmarks in our children’s lives. They’ll offer cooling shade on hot days, habitat for birds and butterflies, and a beautiful canopy that will welcome generations of students to come.
We are deeply grateful to Nicole Dinkins (Principal, Aldan & Colwyn Elementary Schools), Darnell Deans (WPSD Operations Manager), and Reid Lund (Facilities Director, Aramark Facilities Management) for allowing us to plant this living legacy on school grounds.
Around each tree, we planted native wildflower seeds—with help from two enthusiastic young volunteers who reminded us why this work matters. We always welcome new volunteers who want to make Aldan a better, greener place—join us as we work to replace the trees we’ve lost and plant hope for the future!
