The Raid on Zeebrugge was used as a huge propaganda coup for the Royal Navy. Despite 300 men being wounded and more than 200 killed the Navy were able to show that they were still playing an active part in the fight against the Germans. To reinforce their view that the Raid was a success, no less than 8 Victoria Crosses were awarded.
Albert McKenzie was chosen by the crews of HMS Vindictive and of the ferry Daffodil, to be awarded the VC.
His medal was presented to him in the quadrangle at Buckingham Palace on 31 July 1918 by King George V.
Albert was given a hero's welcome when he returned home to Shorncliffe Road in Bermondsey
