In September 2004 the Royal Navy kindly invited Colin and Nick McKenzie to be their guests of honour at the opening of the new 'McKenzie VC accommodation block' at the home of the Royal Navy Command HQ HMS Excellent, Whale Island, Portsmouth. Colin McKenzie addressed the assembled guests and planted a tree. A reception was held in the Officers Mess where Albert's Victoria Cross medal was on display, having been brought down from London for the day by Diana Condell, Curator of Medals at the Imperial War Museum
