The travels of Albert's VC medal
After Albert's death in 1918 the Victoria cross medal was in the care of his mother Eliza McKenzie. In July 1924 she posted the medal to Albert's eldest brother Donald who had moved to Canada
In 1937 the medal returned to England with Donald and his second wife Louisa, when the family moved back from Canada. After Donald's death in 1945 his widow Louisa took the medal with her when she moved back to Canada. She then passed the medal on to her stepson Donald Albert McKenzie
In 1956 Donald Albert lent the medal to his uncle Thomas McKenzie who was Albert's last surviving brother. Thomas then travelled from his home in Winnipeg to wear Albert's medal whilst attending the Victoria Cross Centenary celebrations in Hyde Park London in front of HM Queen Elizabeth.
The medal returned to America and remained in the possession of Donald Albert who looked after it until his death in 1971. His widow Violet looked after it until her death in February 1991 when it passed their son Donald Michael McKenzie
Donald Michael McKenzie died in 2011 having left instructions for the medal to placed on permanent display at the Imperial War Museum in London. He appointed Colin McKenzie to be the family representative for matters relating to Albert's medal.
