Strike Updates
The Greater Albany Education Association is on strike.
The Greater Albany Education Association bargaining team has negotiated for months in an attempt to reach an agreement, but GAPS continues to ignore the voices within our community and invest in our schools in a way that will improve outcomes for our students and demonstrated that they do not grasp the level of crisis happening within our schools.
The best way to support Albany educators is to join us on picket lines and at rallies across the district.
Our students deserve more one-on-one attention from dedicated and well-qualified educators. They deserve safe, modern classrooms with small class sizes, creating an environment where students can focus on learning and thrive.
GAPS teachers report that the District has rampant violations of Individual Educational Programs (IEPs) for students with heightened support needs, a population that has grown significantly in the past several decades. Despite enjoying a 13% budget surplus, GAPS management has routinely denied students with learning differences the rights they are legally entitled to and receive in other Districts.
What we are asking for:
Supporting students with learning differences: Students with IEPs have a legal right to tailored instruction and support. We’re fighting to ensure every student’s unique learning plan is honored and fulfilled.
Smaller class sizes for meaningful learning: Smaller classes allow educators to connect with each student, adapt lessons, and provide critical one-on-one support. Overcrowded classrooms burden teachers and leave students without the individual attention they deserve.
Retaining experienced educators and staff: Albany students benefit from skilled educators who know their needs and are committed to their growth. Retaining dedicated staff means students receive consistency, care, and high-quality education from professionals invested in their communities.
We will continue to fight until the district agrees to a contract that secures this vision for schools, students, and educators that our community deserves.
