Alaska Native people have a long tradition of being active – hunting, fishing, gathering plants and berries, and walking on the land.
Many of our ancestors were physically fit, based on the way they lived every day.
To reduce cancer risk, have fun being physically active for at least 30 minutes every day and maintaining a healthy body weight.

Physical Activity By Joni Young
"Physical activity reduces your risk of cancer. Go for a walk with your family and continue gathering Native foods."
Being physically active can help reduce the risk of cancer, improve outcomes after diagnosis, and reduce the risk of cancer returning.
Physical activity can decrease cancer risk for at least 13 cancers, including cancers of the breast, colon and rectum, uterus, esophagus, liver, stomach, kidneys, head, neck, bladder, and lung (in current and former smokers), and blood cancers such as myeloid leukemia and multiple myeloma.
While the exact link between physical activity and cancer isn't well understood, there are several proposed explanations for how physical activity reduces cancer risk:
Increased physical activity reduces overweight/obesity, which is a risk factor for many cancers, like breast cancer, colorectal cancer, and stomach cancer (see image at right).
Physical activity reduces inflammation.
Physical activity reduces the amount of some hormones that are related to cancer.

Aerobic exercise gets your heart pumping faster, which burns calories to help with weight control and weight loss.
Strength training keeps bones strong and helps with balance as people age. Muscles burn more calories than fat. When a person gains muscles, their body burns more calories in a day.
Flexibility activities lengthen and stretch muscles to help prevent injuries and back pain, and helps improve balance. Well-stretched muscles improve the range of motion throughout the body to help us move more easily.
One of the hardest parts about being active is STAYING active! Let’s look at how Nick Iligutchiak Hanson and the community of Unalakleet play every day.
What do you think can help you and your community stay active?
The best physical activity is the one that we actually do! And the more fun an activity is, the more likely we are to do it.
