Unlike regular plastics which take hundreds of years to decompose, Bioplastics only take around three to four months to completely break down and decompose, making them far more sustainable.
In contrast to regular plastics which are primarily produced from petroleum which drastically increase the carbon footprint, bioplastics are produced from biomass sources that are renewable like recycled food waste, straw, cornstarch and, sawdust.
Every year, plastics weighing over 300 million tons metric tons are produced. Scientists estimate that at least 90% of the produced plastic products can be completely eradicated by simply switching to bioplastics. Most of the plastic that is produced is for the purposes of packaging. We cannot seem to escape plastic packages. Want to buy fresh foods? It's wrapped in plastic. Want to order some clothes online? That is reinforced with bubble wrap and more plastic packaging. Want to throw a quick party? All the cutlery is plastic! None of these are bioplastics!
Over eight million tons of plastic lie in the ocean endangering aquamarine life. There are literal "islands" and "mountains" of plastic all over the world. The production of plastic skyrockets the carbon footprint and releases toxic gasses into the atmosphere. The only way to resolve this would be responsible consumerism and the introduction of social enterprises that aim to resolve this.
