Studies in Business Casual

This residency was all about clothes. Using the classic button-down collared shirt as our starting point, we explored the many ways a pre-existing garment can be transformed into something new.

Each student received one second-hand shirt, and together we considered the history of this ubiquitous garment, what it represents today, as well as how other artists and designers have adapted and reimagined it. Over the course of each 6-week session, students learned basic sewing stitches and were invited to experiment with new materials, new practices of adornment, and dressing up.

Shirts were transformed into a rich assortment of wearable creations, including bags, hats, masks, shoes, pants, and skirts – as well as a whole range of garments that defy name or categorization! On the final day, each class held a fashion show where students walked the runway and shared their creations with their class.
