The Eyes of the Water Creating Ecological Streams Through Art

"The Eyes of the Water" is an eco-artistic project that connects art-making with the realms of nature, community, and creativity.

Water, in all its forms, serves as both a seed and medium for a unique kind of creativity. The water art we intend to co-create, with students, teachers, and school support workers, symbolizes impermanence, echoing the transitory nature of the art itself. Art is not a commodity but rather a manifestation of the fluidity of life, constantly flowing and evolving.

Our project involves a connection with water, both physical and metaphorically. Students are engaged in activities such as tasting water and tea making, allowing them to experience and appreciate the preciousness of this vital element. Students have created water poems, stories, and prints, playing with their visual perceptions, and connecting their feelings to clean waters.

Natural paints, watercolours, and other techniques have been practiced to reinforce the bond between art and nature. Collective art-making fosters personal and regenerative expressions, embracing diversity and inclusiveness within the community. The outdoor art studio becomes a space for openness, generosity, courage, and listening, where every individual story holds significance in the broader narrative of the community.

Through inquiry, curiosity, and empathy, this project deepens our understanding of how water shapes the lands and also our own lives. "The Eyes of the Water" invites us to explore the intricate interplay between art and ecology, where the movement of water mirrors the transience of art and where each stroke, each creation, becomes a testament to the beauty and fragility of our natural world.

Much gratitude for being part of a circle of ensoñadoras y ensoñadores.

It is an honour to do our work and to dwell in the unceded ancestral lands of the Musqueam, Squamish and Tsleil-Waututh people
