Navigating the evolving landscape of AI and Generative AI (GenAI) in higher education remains a critical challenge. The AI Assessment Scale (AIAS) was introduced in early 2024 as a practical framework for addressing GenAI use in educational assessment, and has since been adopted by hundreds of institutions globally and translated into 30 languages.
This paper presents an updated version of the AIAS, incorporating social constructivist principles, functioning as an assessment redesign framework to enhance validity, and featuring inclusive visual assets. Additionally, 'AI exploration' is introduced as a new level, preparing students for an AI-augmented world. The intended applications of the AIAS are clarified, offering practical implementation guidance and demonstrating its dual function as a communication tool and a framework for task redesign that strengthens validity.
