From Fairness to Justice: A Philosophical Analysis of Gender and Race in AI

Bio
Youjin Kong is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Philosophy at Seoul National University in South Korea, where she is also affiliated with the Artificial Intelligence Institute, the Institute for Gender Research, and the American Studies Institute. Her research is in social and political philosophy, feminist and critical race philosophy, and AI ethics.
She was previously an Assistant Professor of Philosophy at the University of Georgia (2023-24) and a Visiting Assistant Professor at Oregon State University (2020-22). She earned her Ph.D. in Philosophy from Michigan State University, and her M.A. and B.A. in Philosophy from Seoul National University.
Her recent publications include: “What Is the Point of Equality in Machine Learning Fairness? Beyond Equality of Opportunity” (FAccT 2025), “Intersectional Feminist Theory as a Non-Ideal Theory: Asian American Women Navigating Identity and Power” (Ergo 2023), and “Are ‘Intersectionally Fair’ AI Algorithms Really Fair to Women of Color? A Philosophical Analysis” (FAccT 2022).
공유진: 서울대학교 철학과 조교수. 서울대 AI연구원, 여성연구소, 미국학연구소에도 겸무연구원으로 참여하고 있다. 주요 연구분야는 사회철학, 젠더·인종철학, 인공지능 윤리다. 서울대 철학과 학부와 석사과정을 거쳐 미국 미시건 주립대학교 철학과에서 박사학위를 취득했다. 이후 오리건 주립대학교 철학과 객원조교수(2020-22), 조지아 대학교 철학과 조교수(2023-24)로 근무하였다. 최근 논문으로는 “What Is the Point of Equality in Machine Learning Fairness?
