Parents of younger children often ask if their kids can join our team. While NICA participation is limited to 6th–12th graders, the AHS Maroons make exceptions for select 5th graders who have either a parent serving as a coach chaperone or a strong race résumé.
If you need to bolster your race resume before the enrollment deadline closes, check out both TMBRA and the TORS series fall series. For 2025/26 season there are 3 XC races before enrollment closes.
For girls, there’s an exciting opportunity to ride a NICA course on race Saturdays through the GRiT program. Unfortunately, similar options are not currently available for boys.

This is a group ride that leaves from ATX Bikes back lot at 6pm every Tuesday. Ridership count ranges from ~30 - ~120 depending on weather and time of year.
This ride is tiered, with riders from Race Pace through Groups 1, 2, 3, 4, 5. There is also a social pace which often includes many kids.
Note, this is not a sanitized ride, it is a drop ride, and kids require chaperones. All that said, it's a great ride to get familiar with the ~180 miles of trails in south Austin and meet some riding buddies.
Once you've attended a few rides you can get invited to the mtbmuchachos email list serv, where discussions happen regarding rides, ride leaders, and different options for 'kiddie crank' rides.
