PHILOSOPHICAL PAINTING: RAPHAEL'S SCHOOL OF ATHENS

February 28 - 5 p.m.

Raphael’s School of Athens is often described as the quintessential “philosophical painting” of the High Renaissance, not simply because it depicts ancient philosophers, but because it visualizes philosophy as a way of knowing the world. Set within an idealized architectural space, the fresco stages philosophy as a dynamic exchange of ideas rather than a fixed doctrine. The central figures of Plato and Aristotle embody contrasting modes of thought—metaphysical speculation and empirical inquiry—while the surrounding philosophers represent diverse approaches to ethics, mathematics, politics, and natural science.Join us into an in-depth exploration of this famous work in order to gain a deeper insight into its meaning and significance.
