TRACING ARTISTIC ANCESTRIES: BRANCUSI
June 18, 4 p.m.
When Constantin Brâncuși left Auguste Rodin’s studio after only two months, remarking that "nothing grows under the shade of great trees," he began a lifelong quest to capture the "essence" of things rather than their outward appearance. And yet, in his search for that essence, he drew on diverse artistic sources – ranging from ancient Greek art to the folk traditions of his native country, Romania. In this lecture, we look more closely at the ways in which those sources shaped his radical modernist language.
Structure: Each lecture is a live event via zoom: a brief check and introduction, to ensure that participants have been able to connect, followed by a slide-presentation of about 50-60 minutes, and a Q&A discussion of about 20-30 minutes. Participants do not have to sign up for a zoom account. The link to the lecture is sent on the day of the event.
Fee: 20 USD per lecture, per person
