Nativity with Pinecone Stable
São Paulo, Brazil
Painted clay, wood, and other natural materials
Circa 1990s
The stable for this Nativity uses the scales of the Brazilian pine tree cone as roof shingles. The handmade clay figures include Mary, Joseph, the Christ Child, an angel, a shepherd, a donkey, a cow, and a sheep. Gold accents have been painted on all of the pieces. The area around São Paulo is well known for its handmade pottery, including Nativities. Christmas in São Paulo features a Feira da Natividade (Nativity Fair) with bazaars, concerts, a Christmas play, and a large public Nativity scene. Public and private Nativity displays are common throughout Brazil.
