More Than Civility

At the Aggie Lyceum Student Chapter, we believe democracy depends on more than agreeing with one another—it depends on learning how to live, work, and lead alongside people with different experiences and perspectives.

Civic friendship is the practice of building genuine relationships across differences. It means treating every person with dignity, listening with curiosity, and seeking understanding before judgment. Civic friendship does not require us to abandon our beliefs or avoid difficult conversations. Instead, it calls us to engage with humility, respect, and a shared commitment to the common good.

What It Looks Like

Civic friendship means:

• Asking thoughtful questions with curiosity.

• Respectfully disagreeing without personal attacks.

Why It Matters

Today's world often encourages division, quick judgments, and conversations that generate more heat than light.

The Aggie Lyceum believes there is a better way.

By practicing civic friendship, we become better students, better leaders, and better citizens. We learn how to approach disagreement with confidence instead of fear, communicate across differences, and contribute meaningfully to our communities.

These are skills that extend far beyond college—they shape how we lead in our careers, serve our communities, and participate in our democracy.

Civic Friendship at the ALSC

Our meetings are built around the principles of civic friendship.

Whether we're discussing current events, welcoming guest speakers, participating in service projects, or simply getting to know one another, we strive to create an environment where every member feels respected, heard, and valued.

We believe some of the strongest friendships are formed not because we agree on everything, but because we choose to listen, learn, and grow together.
