The Aggie Lyceum is a university-wide program at Texas A&M that prepares students to become thoughtful, informed, and engaged citizens through civil discourse, media literacy, and civic engagement. Open to students of all majors and backgrounds, the Aggie Lyceum provides opportunities to explore important issues, strengthen leadership skills, and practice meaningful dialogue in a respectful, nonpartisan environment. It was created in support of Texas A&M's Citizens for Good program, with the College of Arts & Sciences leading the initiative's Skills Pillar.
Inspired by the Texas Lyceum and the ancient Greek Lyceum founded by Aristotle, the program embraces the principle of civic friendship—the idea that people can respectfully engage with those who hold different perspectives while working together toward the common good. Rather than debating to "win," participants learn to listen, ask thoughtful questions, evaluate information critically, and seek understanding.
“’Skills’ considered most critical for well-equipped citizenry are media literacy or the ability to critically evaluate information, and the ability to engage in civil discourse. Other skills – mediation as critical to civic leadership and influencing public policy – are higher levels skills some students may choose to pursue.”
