WHAT MAKES A MARIACHI
Garrett Talamantes ('28) and Raul Mendoza ('27)
This section consists of guitars, vihuelas, and the guittarón. The guitarrón provides the rhythmic foundation while the vihuelas add a distinctive percussive sound. The guitars tie the harmony together. Without armonía, a mariachi would be without rhythm.
Joshua Flores ('26) and Lucas Walker ('28)
Trumpets provide power of a mariachi band. Known as the loudest instrument in mariachi ensembles, the trumpet is the defining instrument of modern mariachi groups. They often provide the melody of certain songs as well as crisp articulation to the notes being played.
Anahi Briones ('26) and Elijah Orozco ('26)
Violins and flutes serve as the primary melodic and harmonic instruments in a mariachi ensemble. They provide precise sounds that weave around the main tune of a song that’s being played. With their lighter sound, they’re able to provide more elegancy when needed in certain songs.
Ivan Sanchez ('25)
No mariachi would be complete without vocalists. Vocalists are essential to any mariachi band. Not only do they provide the words to the songs, but the story being told as well. They also express the emotion and impact of the song through their mannerisms and movement when singing.
