Short Vowels

Subject

A subject is a part of a sentence that contains the person or thing performing the action (or verb) in a sentence. ... In the sentence, the subject is "I" and the verb is "will call." Example: You were a great singer. In this sentence, the subject is "you" and the verb is "were."

Predicate

The part of a sentence or clause containing a verb and stating something about the subject (e.g., went home in John went home ).

Story Stucture

A story has five basic but important elements. These five components are: the characters, the setting, the plot, the conflict, and the resolution. These essential elements keep the story running smoothly and allow the action to develop in a logical way that the reader can follow.

Subject and Predicate

Every complete sentence contains two parts: a subject and a predicate. The subject is what (or whom) the sentence is about, while the predicate tells something about the subject

VCCV Pattern

A VCCV word is a two-syllable words with the pattern vowel-consonant-consonant-vowel in the middle of the word. The word breaks into two syllables after the first consonant.

Multiple Meanings

Homonyms, or multiple-meaning words, are words that have the same spelling and usually sound alike, but have different meanings (e.g. dog bark, tree bark). Beginning in kindergarten, children learn to use context to determine which meaning of a multiple-meaning word is correct in a sentence.

Proper Nouns

A name used for an individual person, place, or organization, spelled with initial capital letters, e.g., Larry, Mexico, and Boston Red Sox.
