During the fourth exposure (JuneโJuly 2025), the implementation phase for addressing community health problems in Barangay San Vicente, Municipality of Mahayag, Zamboanga del Sur officially began. The top three identified health concerns were the prevalence of hypertension, diabetes mellitus, and a high incidence of dengue.
Team Alegre San Vicente focused its efforts on strengthening community knowledge and awareness, recognizing that education is essential to lasting change. As Nelson Mandela once said, "Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world."
To address the issue of hypertension in the community, Team Alegre San Vicente implemented a multi-setting health education initiative. Sessions were conducted barangay-wide, per purok, and house-to-house, with priority given to identified hypertensive individuals and those at riskโsuch as residents with diabetes mellitus or a family history of hypertension. The lectures covered fundamental concepts of hypertension, including its definition, signs and symptoms, risk factors, diagnosis, and management. Emphasis was placed on the importance of medication adherence and the potential complications of uncontrolled hypertension. To ensure accessibility, sessions were delivered in laymanโs terms and in Bisaya to overcome language and health literacy barriers.
To evaluate the effectiveness of the intervention, pre- and post-tests were administered during each session. Additionally, the team trained willing community volunteers in blood pressure monitoring and provided each participating purok with two sets of BP apparatuses, stethoscopes, and recording books. This addressed a major barrier reported by residentsโthe inability to regularly visit health stations due to distance and lack of transportation fare.
Other supporting activities included community-led Zumba sessions, initiated by the residents themselves, to promote physical activity. Educational, Information, and Communication (EIC) materials such as posters were distributed per purok, and pamphlets were given to participants of the health education sessions to reinforce learning.
To address the rising prevalence of diabetes mellitus in Barangay San Vicente, Team Alegre San Vicente conducted targeted interventions focused on education and lifestyle modification. Health education sessions were held across multiple settingsโbarangay-wide, per purok, and house-to-houseโwith pre- and post-tests administered to measure knowledge gained. These sessions prioritized individuals living with diabetes and those at risk, covering topics such as the nature of diabetes, its risk factors, symptoms, complications, and the importance of lifestyle changes.
Lectures also introduced the basics of blood sugar monitoring, emphasizing its role in diabetes management. However, no blood glucose monitoring equipment was distributed during this exposure. To promote healthier lifestyles, community-led Zumba sessions were facilitated, encouraging regular physical activity as a key component of diabetes prevention and control.
Educational, Information, and Communication (EIC) materialsโsuch as posters per purok and pamphlets for session attendeesโwere also distributed to reinforce the key messages shared during the sessions.
To address the high incidence of dengue in Barangay San Vicente, Team Alegre San Vicente implemented a series of targeted educational and preventive activities. Health education sessions were conducted per purok, with special attention given to Purok 5, which had recorded dengue cases. Additionally, an outreach session was held at San Vicente Elementary School, also located in Purok 5.
One key school-based initiative was the โAdopt a Cornerโ activity, where groups of students were assigned specific areas within the school to keep clean. This initiative aimed to instill responsibility and awareness of environmental cleanliness as a dengue prevention strategy. Cleanliness and progress in these assigned areas are monitored by teachers and will be re-evaluated during future community exposures.
Pre- and post-tests were administered to assess changes in residentsโ knowledge about dengue transmission, symptoms, prevention, and control. To further support the campaign, dengue awareness posters were placed in Puroks 3 and 5, and child-friendly, comic-style posters were displayed throughout various corners of the school to engage younger audiences in a more relatable and visual manner.
Through these targeted interventions in hypertension, diabetes, and dengue, Team Alegre San Vicente aimed not only to address pressing health concerns but also to empower the community through education, awareness, and active participation. Each small stepโfrom health sessions to school-led cleanliness drivesโpaves the way for long-term, sustainable change. Hopefully, in the next exposure, the team can build on this foundation by expanding resources, deepening engagement, and implementing more community-driven solutions. As Margaret Mead once said, "Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it's the only thing that ever has."
