Kai'avan was originally an archangel in the service of a god of justice. That deity was for a very long time an impartial arbiter and well-respected, but eventually began to change, becoming stiff and heartless and even tyrannical. After his liege gave an order to eradicate an entire race of mortals for defying his will, Kai'avan turned on him and slew him. Since then, he has been the patron deity of rebels and revolutionaries, as well as good-hearted rogues and vigilantes. His worship is usually legal only in republican/democratic nations, and many imperial governments persecute his followers relentlessly; occasionally he will intervene and topple such regimes.
Kai'avan appears as an angelic being who is clothed relatively simply and wears medium armor; his white hair is short and his blue eyes sparkle in sunlight. His symbol is a broken chain.
Followers of Kai'avan are zealous and unrelenting, believing that the complicit are as guilty as the perpetrator, especially when it comes to tyranny. A core idea in the faith is that the only fitting punishment for a tyrant is death, on the basis that such corrupt individuals cannot be reformed. Slavery is seen as a capital offense as well, since to take away one's self-determination is tantamount to murder (self-determination is seen as an integral part of one's soul). The actions of his followers have led to the abolition of slavery in several places.
