Prof. Dr. R. Badlishah Ahmad is a prominent academic leader and researcher at Universiti Malaysia Perlis (UniMAP), where he has served as the Dean of the School of Computer and Communication Engineering since December 2004. He is also the head of the Embedded Computing Research Cluster, a role through which he has advanced cutting-edge research in embedded systems, optical networks, and digital innovation. Prof. Badlishah’s academic credentials include a Ph.D. and M.Sc. in Optical Network and Optical Electronics, respectively, from the University of Strathclyde, UK, and a B.Eng. (Hons) in Electrical and Electronics from the University of Glasgow, UK. His expertise and dedication to engineering education have positioned him as a cornerstone of UniMAP’s research and teaching endeavors.
A senior member of IEEE and an active member of the International Association of Engineers (IAENG), Prof. Badlishah has received prestigious awards and numerous accolades. Some highlights include the Excellent Researcher Award in 2007 for his groundbreaking work on face recognition based on iris detection and the UniMAP Excellence Award (Anugerah Khidmat Cemerlang) in 2006. His innovative research contributions have been recognized globally, with his projects earning medals at various international exhibitions, such as:
Portable Fruit Maturity System - Gold Medal at the 20th International Invention, Innovation & Technology Exhibition (ITEX 2009), Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
SHOENIX: An Operating System for Embedded Applications - Double Gold Medals (Industrial and Design Categories) at the BIS 2009 in London.
Web-Based Wireless Data Acquisition System for Water Quality Monitoring - Silver Medal, Universiti Malaysia Perlis Research Exhibition, 2007.
1Antenna: A Novel Antenna for Wireless Applications - Silver Medal, PECIPTA 2009.
In his capacity as a researcher, Prof. Badlishah has secured significant funding for diverse projects, including a Ministry of Science, Technology & Innovation (MOSTI) funded study on an error-resilient and efficient image coder for wireless networks and the development of a Smart Camera for intelligent traffic surveillance systems. His extensive research has led to pioneering projects like a “Non-Destructive Fruit Maturity Testing System” utilizing neural networks and radio frequency, as well as numerous wireless and sensor-based systems for environmental monitoring.
Prof. Badlishah is also deeply involved in academic publication and mentorship, with over 100 international conference proceedings, 60 journal articles, and authorship of four books and three laboratory manuals. He has supervised a significant number of postgraduate students, with 10 Ph.D. students and seven M.Sc. students as primary supervisees and several others as a co-supervisor. His consultancy work has included a multi-million RM IT consultancy for Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM), as well as collaborations with global companies, such as Agilent, promoting the development of open-source and embedded systems in Malaysia.
