I have always considered myself culturally diverse, even before studying at Florida International University. Growing up, I was surrounded by people from different walks of life—friends I might never have met if not for shared interests and the simple happenstance of being in the same place at the right time. However, while I was exposed to diverse groups, my understanding of what made them truly diverse remained surface-level. I recognized differences primarily in terms of nationality, but I didn’t fully grasp the deeper significance of their cultural identities. I knew they were different from me in some way, but I had yet to understand what those differences truly meant.
It wasn’t until I began taking a variety of courses at FIU that my perspective shifted. Beyond the Global Learning-designated courses, I sought out classes that introduced me to different histories, philosophies, and traditions, each one expanding my knowledge in ways I hadn't expected. I explored Buddhism’s connection to the divine through art, gaining insight into its spiritual depth and symbolism. I studied the practices of the indigenous Yukaghir hunters, learning how their seemingly simple customs carried profound meaning in their daily lives. These experiences challenged me to look beyond surface-level differences and appreciate the intricacies of cultural identity, history, and tradition.
Alongside my coursework, participating in the Global Medallion program further deepened my interest in global understanding. As I progressed academically and professionally, I became more aware of the complex interconnections between cultural diversity and global issues. This awareness took on a new dimension through firsthand experiences in France and Italy, where I immersed myself in centuries-old cultural traditions. Walking through historic sites, engaging with local communities, and witnessing the ways in which culture evolves over time gave me a tangible sense of the depth and resilience of these societies.
My time at FIU was nothing short of transformative. What started as a passive awareness of diversity grew into an active pursuit of understanding. My engagement in global and diverse experiences shaped my academic and personal growth in ways I never expected, reinforcing the importance of cultural awareness in every aspect of life. Moving forward, I will carry this perspective with me, applying it to both academic and professional endeavors as I navigate complex global issues with greater insight, empathy, and appreciation for the diversity that shapes our world.
