My name is Adriana Leal. I am a senior pursuing a BA in Art History with a Minor in Fine Arts/Studio Practices.
Throughout my experience within art history, questions have come across my mind about different works of art: “What is the artist trying to capture in a particular scene?” and “What materials did they use, and how does it relate to their vision?”, for example.
Most importantly, I’ve always wondered why an artist creates the work they produce in the first place, whether for academic purposes, creation for certain people within their lifetime, or even as a form of escape into the art to comfort oneself.
I always seek to understand the meaning behind works of art in terms of their purpose, if any, based on the subjects used in certain scenes and execution. It is a core concept that I take to heart and attempts to inform others of when looking at an artist’s work, and understanding the “why” for many artists is challenging, primarily due to possible personal reasons that haven’t been disclosed throughout history. However, for the reasons that have been disclosed, I enjoy seeing how artists, no matter how big or small they appeared in history, are like everyday artists who live in our world and take it one day at a time.
