More often than not, the newborns that we find are dirty - be it mud or dirt from the road, crust that forms around their eyes, and even excrement. This is as a result of their mother not being present to clean them.
It is important to get the dirt off the kitten as soon as possible, as it can cause discomfort and even rashes. When cleaning a dirty kitten, always use warm water and a soft towel, as they are quite fragile.
Spot Cleaning
You can spot clean the kitten by gently cleaning the surface of their fur and the most necessary areas with a warm damp towel. Do this in short strokes in the direction of the fur growth. Gently rub back and forth on any clumped fur with warm water. This will soften the crust and enable it to be removed.
Bath
If the kitten is very soiled, it will need a warm water bath, lasting 5 to 10 minutes.
You will need a basin/sink, a clean warm towel and a kitten-friendly flea shampoo. Contact your vet for the most ideal shampoo. If you cannot get a shampoo, it is advisable to only brush it with a tick comb.
First, fill the basin with warm water. Make sure it is not too cold or hot, to avoid chills or burns. Don't let the water exceed 3 or 4 inches to avoid drowning, and always hold the kitten up with your hand. It may struggle or be uncomfortable, so it is advised to gently feel them and get rid of any noises like running water, that may cause panic.
Once the kitten is calm, using a small cup, gently pour water onto the kitten. Make sure to not wet the ears or eyes. Wet a small cloth, add the shampoo onto it, and rub it onto the coat. Make sure to clean the whole body, including the paws and under the tail. Gently wash off with warm water.
Dry the kitten with a soft dry towel in the direction of the fur. If it is cold, hold it against your body for warmth. Once dry, wrap the kitten in another dry towel until there is no trace of water on its skin.
Remember to only bathe kittens when it is absolutely needed. Always provide a suitable warm bedding and ensure that the fur is completely dry before laying it down.
