Beloground Soil Arthropod Communities

Evaluate the effects of irrigation optimization and cropping systems on belowground soil arthropod communities, soil biological quality, and pest suppression.
Invasive Species Monitoring
Monitor invasive (e.g., cereal grass aphid) and emerging (e.g., wheat stem sawfly) insect pests in Utah’s agronomic crops using statewide field surveys, molecular diagnostics, and ecological modeling to predict distribution, risk, and climate‑driven changes
Alfalfa Pest Management
Survey alfalfa fields across Utah to document aphid species, alfalfa weevil abundance, and respective parasitism rates using combined morphological and molecular identification. This critical data can then guide species‑specific IPM strategies.
Insecticide Resistance Management
Conduct alfalfa weevil field monitoring and laboratory bioassays to detect insecticide resistance and to develop resistance management recommendations for growers.
Turfgrass Pest Management
Evaluate the effects of cultural practices on pest and beneficial arthropod communities in turfgrass systems. Develop and encourage urban pollinator habitats in Utah that support pollinators alongside sustainable turf and pest management.
