Jesters in a distant kingdom have been banished from their kingdom due to their poor jokes. So as a result the jesters banded together in order to search for the fabled Holy Book Of Jokes! So as their leader you must instruct them and guide them across various dangerous obstacles! With tools at your disposal lead the jesters to the Holy Book Of Jokes and return back to the kingdom with some splendid jokes!
For this game I wanted the players to feel challenged in an intellectual way, as it is the main form of fun for puzzle games. I wanted the player to have the option of completing the levels in different ways. This is because I had figured out that a puzzle is much more enjoyable if players can complete it in different ways as it can also add upon the replay-ability of the levels.
The main reference of this game is an old game called Lemmings, as suggested by our lecturers. Lemmings is a game about giving the lemmings(people) in the level different abilities that allows them to reach from the start to the end of the level. The game also makes the player use their sense of timing as well since some abilities should only be used at a certain time as well as order.
The player can use any of the 5 tools to help bring the jesters from point A to point B in each of the levels.
As for Game Project Studio 1 we had to pick from 3 art styles to follow and so we decided to go with geometric shapes as the art team felt most comfortable with that. So as a result we had to envision all the art assets in that style and ensure that there is clear shapes that is associated with each prop in the level and UI. So the main aim for the art style is to make the visuals easy to understand by the players, as it is key that players can see exactly what's happening in a puzzle game.
The art style we are going for is similar to this game as most if not all the assets have a clear shape to them and is fairly minimalist in terms of looks. We wanted to refer to that part of their art style as well as use colors that are more tamed and less flashy/bright.
The art style used in the game Journey is what we would like to achieve as it presents a simple minimalist art style which can be easily understood by people who look at the game. So the charm in this game is the simplicity of the art, but it still looks really good and creates different atmospheres in different environments.
