What is it exactly?

Don't Stop The Party! is about Avalon which is a place where everyone goes to be their perfect version of themselves. So play as one of the 4 playable characters, enter a 4 player free for all battle to be the best in Avalon! So essentially it is a 4 player party fighting game (Similarly to Super Smash Bros) and players are battling each other using their unique abilities whilst also dealing with environmental factors that can affect the gameplay.

The Characters

Delilah

The Delinquent Of The Dance Floor

Delilah's play style is essentially distance, she uses her chains in a way that allows her to push enemies away, or she can use them to pull enemies closer.

Cain

The Dapper, Dandy Robot

Cain's play style is quick and snappy, he uses his cane to do multiple stabs at high speeds. He can also use the cain to grab enemies from distance.

Clark

Everyone's Hero, Lord And Savior

Clark's play style is to use his fists in heavy movements. Each of his attacks to tons of damage, but take more time to wind up and to recover from.

Fay

DJ Of Paradise Lost

Fay's likes to use her discs and throw them at her enemies. Her discs move about at her command as she commands them to attack for her.

(Control Scheme)

Basic Actions

There are basic actions that every character can do, these actions only require an input from the controller.

Walking

Characters can walk around the level in a 8 way movement by tilting the left joystick in the desired direction. As most games utilize the joystick for character movement we decided it was the most intuitive for the players.

Dashing

The players can dash towards any direction by pressing the right bumper button and they will dash in the direction they are facing.

Normal Attack

The 4 different characters can do different normal attacks that cycle in a loop. The attacks have different values of knockback, damage dealt and range.

Grab/Throwing

Each character can grab and automatically throw an enemy behind them, the values of the grab range and throw distance varies from each character. The reason why we made it an automatic throw is because we felt it can be awkward if players were allowed to just keep hold of a character in their grasps.

Party Orbs!

Basically party orb is an item that can spawn randomly into the level, vie being thrown in from the crowd. When any of the players break a party orb they will have their ultimate bar get instantly fully charge. If there is any other players nearby the party orb when it is destroyed, their ultimate bar charge will decrease a little bit as well.

This mechanic is meant to give the player in last place a chance to gain some surge of strength if they are able to break the party orb for themselves.

Ultimate Moves!

For the characters they each have their own unique ultimate move that they can unleash on their enemies! In order to add to their ultimate charge they have to attack other players or collect the party orb that spawns randomly into the level.

Delilah

As for Delilah her ultimate ability is her taking her whip chain and swinging around her in a circle, much like a spinning top. Every second she sends out a shock wave that can damage enemies in a random direction. This ultimate lasts for a full 10 seconds, in which the last 3 seconds the frequency of them increase by double.

Cain

Cain's ultimate ability allows him to dash 5 times around the level, with each dash he will spawn multiple copies of himself that dash in different directions in a 180 angle in front of him. He will automatically dash in the direction the player is facing, with a second cool down in between to allow them to adjust their direction.

Clark

Clark's ultimate ability allows him to soar into the sky and slam down with his fists which damages other characters within the blast radius. Clark performs this action a total of 3 times.

Fay

Fay throws her two discs around the level and they bounce of the walls of the level and damage any character that gets hit by it. While that happens Fay twirls around and is invulnerable to any damage.

The Level

For the level I have envisioned it to be a club where people an go join a party and have a fun time. So using Google Sketchup I created a rough mock up of how I think level should be.

Refined Level Design In Minecraft

I wanted all the gameplay to be centered at the dance floor segment of the level, with the surroundings to enhance the environment so that the player feels more immersed in the game world they are in.

After some tweaks and fixes we decided to make the dance floor into a square shape as it allows for more space for the players to fight in. I transferred the idea onto Minecraft as I felt that it'll be easier to set the mood this way.

So in the above picture is what we ended up with most of the art assets placed in. The lighting as well was very important to get right as I think it can really help boost the wanted atmosphere at a big party.

Dance Floor Tile Hazard

The dance floor periodically falls down and leaves the center up so that it forces the players to fight in a tighter area. If a player were to fall down into the hole they will be shot back up to the center of the level and take some damage. This is similar to Super Smash Bros where if you hit a spike or lava it will shoot you back up in a random direction.

Feedback Forms

Throughout this project I was tasked with creating the feedback forms as well as tabulating all the feedback into a spreadsheet that explains everything. I split each individual feedback into different sections so that my team members can understand the solutions for each feedback (if any).

SEA Game Awards 2020!

Since we officially finished the project at the end of April 2020, our game was entered for the Audience Choice Award as well as the Best Student Game Award. We are happy to say that we managed to win both awards with Don't Stop The Party! and we are very grateful for this opportunity!
