PROLOGO

The Informational Measurement of the Human Act. [10]

PROLOGUE

The remarkable development of neurophysiology and computer science in the 1940s, created the conditions that made the study of “feedback” possible. This study took place within the framework of the behaviorism of the sciences of those years. We are referring to the birth of "cybernetics", an interdisciplinary science inspired by the feedback processes typical of vital resonances. According to its founders, Arturo Rosenblueth (1900-1970) and Norbert Wiener (1894-1964), cybernetics is the "study of the analogies between control and communication systems in living beings and in machines, and in particular, that of the applications of biological regulation mechanisms to technology". About this foundation Heinz von Foerster wrote:

The cybernetic adventure had begun when Wiener and Rosenblueth, working in very diverse fields, found a common conceptual network for understanding specific problems in those fields. Wiener was trying to conceive theoretically, to enable them to build them, machines that could have a "purpose", to correct their own operation as to maintain and fulfill that purpose.[1]

On the other hand, Rosenblueth was studying a neurological alteration known as "intention tremor", a phenomenon that consists in the tremor of the hand when it is intentionally directed towards an object, for example, grasping a glass.

As we can see, at the origin of the concept of feedback is the concept of "pendulum swing between opposing alternatives". Later, in the frame of Cybernetics 3.0, this phenomenon got the name “organizational levitating resonance” (abbreviated to “OLR”).

Wiener found that feedback could be mounted in an artifact, if it met the following criteria: 1) the presence of two poles: "input" and "output", or "effector” pole and "receiver" pole. 2) The device had to have a sensor to detect specific values of the effectors, and a measuring instrument to "compare" this state with an ideal or desired final state. Curiously, in the classical formulation, the formal logical act of choice is omitted, perhaps because it is usually concealed behind a physical or chemical causative act. However, this choice allows the necessary corrections to be made. Feedback is not only to start again on a new basis, but above all, to choose this basis over other possible ones. In reality, the circularity of the feedback is a subordinate action to the inter-acting between two alternatives.[2]

Obviously, from the point of view of our theory of doing, feedback in living beings and in machines cannot be the same phenomenon. In living beings, feedback requires only the assembly of an OLR[3], but in machines, it is necessary to imitate this OLR by assembling in its place a graphical inter-acting that provides an artificially created “multiple present”. In the machine, the OLR is replaced by a "machine instructions", which consists of acts of graphing, disconnected from the communicating functions of natural language.[4]

Note that, in place of the arbitrariness of speech, the arbitrariness of the code is established. The doing embodied in a machine, has sacrificed the individuation of the speaker in order to achieve the generalization of pure organization. The graphed inter-acts, are mounted on logical propositions of the type "if S, then P". That is to say, the formal logic is no other than that of the assembly of graphed inter-acts. For example, in the case "the machine "R" self-lubricates when the oil level is lower than a certain pre-established ideal", we have: 1) the identification of the artificial Ego "R": 2) the assembly of a measurement (which is a comparison) between the current state and another ideal, that is a parallel act of negotiation. 3) The «act of choice», which we can rightfully call "artificial intelligentization"; that is to say, the inter-acting, graphed as a causative act, more or less visible, already physical, already chemical and nowadays increasingly informational. 4) The “derailment” of the OLR[5] in the very act of oiling the machine, which is a causative act (since the machine R is "self-consumed" in this act). Finally, these derailments are assembled in a recursive act that becomes automatic.[6]

“Second order" cybernetics was born in the early 1970s, some thirty years after "first order" cybernetics. Heinz Von Foerster (1911-2002) coined the term in a speech to the "American Society of Cybernetics", entitled: "Cybernetics of cybernetics". Foerster, but also Margaret Mead (1901-1978), Gregory Bateson (1904-1980) and the Chilean thinkers Humberto Maturana (1928-2021) and Francisco Varela (1946-2001), introduced the observer subject in cybernetics, leaving behind the objectivist cybernetics, developed by Wiener and Arturo Rosenblueth. Von Foerster considered that the original cybernetics of Rosenblueth and Wiener, was devoted to the study of "observed systems" and classified it as a "first order" cybernetics. On the other hand, he considered that it was necessary to develop a "second order" cybernetics, dedicated to the study of "observing systems".

Note that the "observed systems" such as Wiener's feedback, are those that behave like an absolute Ego. They enter into an actional loop with themselves, self-sufficient, assuming the perspective of a divinity without consciousness, outside time, transcendent to the human world.

On the other hand, "observant" systems, such as von Foerster's, are those that introduce an Ego that understands itself as if it were an “animate feedback”. In the works of the Chileans Humberto Maturana (1928-2021) and Francisco Varela (1946-2001), whose work has consolidated second-order cybernetics, the fusion between the observer of the system and the latter being part of the feedback system itself is called "autopoiesis".

However, autopoiesis mounts a dialogue of the Ego with itself; the feedback created does not open for a relationship of dialogue or communication with the Other and the world. In fact, autopoiesis creates a mirror image of the Ego interacting with itself. Consequently, the autopoietic Ego is trapped in an infinite chain of feedback, constituting a clearly subjectivist perspective. Autopoiesis reduces cybernetics to a theory of knowledge in which vital acts are confused with cognitive acts.

To overcome the limits imposed by the behaviorism of the work of Wiener and Rosenblueth, and the subjectivism inherent in the cybernetics of von Foerster, Maturana y Varela, the team of Cybernetics 3.0, including Professor Luis de Marcos Ortega, Dr. Carmen Flores Bjurström, and myself, have developed a new cybernetics, characterized by the understanding "organization" as a consequence of "acting". From this perspective, no organization is possible without a specifically "human" acting. It is no longer the case of "observed systems" nor that of "observing systems"; it is the case of “human acting systems.” In our approach, the feedback and the machine, are human surrogates, their independence is an illusion. In our perspective, “life” is not an abstract concept; it means “human life”, because as humans, we cannot assume a non-human perspective.

In order to raise the "third degree" of efficiency, the Ego that acts, must relate to an Other-ego, that is, the study of feedback must be understood as the study of feedback of doing including the mediation of an Alter-ego (which cannot be a specular image of the self), incorporating human doing in the perspective. In this context, feedback becomes a specific type of the doing of the Ego, and the machine is revealed as its Alter ego. Note that Wiener and his generation conceived the machine as "a thing", opposed to life. Then, for the second-generation cyberneticists, such as von Foerster, Maturana and Varela, life is understood a set of autopoietic "replications":

We refer to replication (or, sometimes, production) when we have an operating mechanism that can repeatedly generate units of the same kind. For example, a factory is a large productive mechanism that, through the repeated application of the same process, produces series of replicas of units of the same kind: fabrics, cars, tires. The same is true for the components of cells. We see this very clearly in the production of proteins, where ribosomes, messenger and transfer nucleic acids, and other molecules together constitute the productive machinery and proteins constitute the product.[7]

For the cybernetics 3.0, the universe consists of acts of variable freedom. In this set of acts, we find those that we distinguish as "vital". The difference between vital and inert acts, then, lies in their degree of freedom. Let us imagine a series of acts and study the relation of each of these acts with respect to their predecessors. Their degree of freedom (or dependence) with respect to their predecessors, will tell us the degree of “randomness” (respectively “necessity” of the series). Let us imagine that this series of acts shows a binary structure ("zeros" and "ones"). We will say that a sequence of acts is 1-free, if it is insensitive to selection according to a single predecessor. This would be the case for “mechanical acts”. Similarly, sequences can be 2-free, 3-free ...n-free, depending on the number of predecessors with respect to which the sequence is insensitive. A sequence is n-free, if any selection from a number "n" of predecessor acts is never 0-free. We say that the vital fact of life is "complex" in this sense.[8]

So much for the research was carried out between 2008 and 2021 by myself together with Prof. Luis de Marcos Ortega, and published in two books: The Informational Foundation of the Human Act and Whispers and Shouts: The Informational Measurement of the Human Act.[9]

In 2020, Dr. Carmen Flores Bjurström joined the team, bringing with her the perspective of quantum physics. After her contributions, we had to revise the methodological frames and assume that the series of zeros and ones, must also include the superposition of zeros with ones (0/1), In other words, qunatum realities had to be considered. This was the point of departure of the concept of “organizational levitating resonance” (“OLR”) understood as the organizational equivalent of the quantum concept of “superposition” and the corresponding concept of “derailment”, aimed to match de quantum concept of “decoherence”. Since then, cybernetics 3.0 becomes recognizable in the texts published jointly with Dr. Carmen Flores.[10]

At present, we explain the n-free series as an “OLR”, in the sense that they give rise to an action that cannot be simplified. “Complexity" is understood as the superposition of incongruent alternatives that, when superimposed, enter into resonance. In other words, the “OLR”, mounts, when negentropy and entropy are in “organizational resonance”.
