Virginia Standards of Learning (SOL)
The Virginia Standards of Learning (SOL) are statewide assessments that measure student achievement in key subject areas:
✅ English (Reading & Writing)
✅ Mathematics
✅ Science
✅ History & Social Science
These assessments help ensure students meet grade level expectations and are prepared for future academic success. SOL tests are given in the spring, and we encourage students to prepare by staying engaged in class, completing assignments, and using available study resources.
Tips for Parents to Help Students Succeed on the Virginia SOL Tests
As SOL testing approaches, we understand that students and parents may feel anticipation and stress. As school counselors, we want to support you in making this a positive and successful experience for your child. Here are some helpful tips to ensure your student is prepared and confident for their SOL assessments:
✅ Ensure a Good Night’s Sleep: Aim for at least 8–10 hours each night, especially before test days. A well-rested brain performs better!
✅ Provide a Nutritious Breakfast: A healthy breakfast fuels focus and concentration. Avoid sugary foods that can cause energy crashes.
✅ Encourage Daily Exercise: Physical activity can reduce stress and improve mental clarity.
✅ Set a Study Schedule: Help your child review material in small, manageable sessions rather than cramming the night before.
✅ Limit Distractions: Create a quiet, comfortable space for studying, away from phones, TV, and other interruptions.
✅ Use Practice Tests: Encourage your child to take SOL practice tests to become familiar with the format and question types.
✅ Stay Calm & Supportive: Ensure your child is prepared and capable. Avoid adding extra pressure.
✅ Use Encouraging Words: Remind them that effort matters more than perfection. Celebrate their hard work and progress.
✅ Teach Relaxation Techniques: Deep breathing, stretching, or short breaks can help reduce test anxiety.
✅ Arrive on Time: Ensure your child gets to school on time and is ready to begin the day stress-free.
✅ Remind Them to Read Carefully: Encourage them to take their time, read directions thoroughly, and check their answers.
✅ Know the Testing Schedule: Be aware of test dates and avoid scheduling appointments on those days.
✅ Communicate with Teachers: Reach out if your child struggles with specific subjects or needs extra support.
✅ Celebrate Effort, Not Just Scores: Acknowledge your child's hard work and dedication regardless of the outcome.
