Development and Adaption of technology help to lead the Evolution of New Media Art and Design. Without new technologies, new media wouldn't be possible. While many theorists argue that new technologies aren't a key to discovering new media, it is hard to say that without technology, some of our new media today wouldn't be possible.
In the article, New Media from Borges to HTML by Lev Manovich, he states "The emergence of new media studies as a field testifies to our recognition of the key cultural role played by digital computers and computer-enabled networking in our global society" (pg. 25). Proving that technology is a key component to new media. Without technology, this field wouldn't have emerged like it did because it allowed for the accessibility, interaction, and creation of new pieces.
Tempera and oil paint was one of the first impacts on new media art. This came to be during the Renaissance era. These two paints had very different qualities that made it easier to use in certain areas giving the artist either more difficulty or making it easier depending on which they tried to use in different regions. This opened up a new window of possibility in art that we can see today.
Print Culture brought forward the chance to make reproducible pictures and texts that could be produced cheaply and easily, bringing artwork into homes. This was huge because bringing art into the homes was a huge step into new media because now art wasn't just something that was for the rich or had to be seen in a museum but also something that you could have in your home.
Photography created new ways to experience art by making it faster and easier to create an image. If someone wanted a self-portrait instead of sitting for hours and days, someone only had to sit for 15 min or less, which was more attractive to people. It also made a way for people to create multiple pictures easier, so people could share their images with family and friends.
In Modern Art, people use their art to express their feelings or to create a new action. This was important because it used new technology to create photo montages collages, and to create movements. Reproduction of art allowed new art techniques to come out and evolve how people reacted to artworks.
Video art was a new way for artists to get their messages across. This was a low-cost and user-friendly way to get a message out to people. It also required the viewers to need to sit and watch the whole video to know how it was going to end. If they didn't do this, then the viewer would be left not knowing how the video increasing the viewers interaction with the piece.
The development of Television brought art into people's homes making it more accessible and giving people the chance to create new forms of art. This creation leads to stereotyping and Pop Art. It also brought the creation of TV shows that made viewing go from communal to familial to individual bringing a whole new aspect to art.
Digital photography led to people being able to access photography more freely. These new devices were more compact and had better storage and batteries, leading to more interactivity and accessibility to people. This also led to the development of Photoshop where people could edit and change their photos to look like how they wanted them to look or even take multiple photos and mash them together.
Artificial Intelligence has emerged recently and has brought up many questions in New Media Art and Design. From this creation, it has also brought up many issues that people have come up with. However, we cannot look at New Media Art without including AI because it is a huge part of today and has brought up lots of issues and controversies in the art world, especially regarding New media. AI made New Media more interactive by allowing anyone to add and create a prompt and have it create the image for you. Making it very interactive by also being able to edit the photo it makes for you by just adding to the prompt.
