While New Media Art has a lot of benefits, especially when it comes to new technology, there are also a lot of questions and controversies. Some of them question whether or not new media art is art, if it is plagiarism, or if it is even creative. This can be seen in the process of whether a photograph of art is art. These controversies and discussions are what make New Media Art so interesting.
Boris Eldagsen, The Electrician (2022). DALL-E 2 generated image.
The piece by Boris Eldagsen brought a lot of attention to AI and its controversies. This photo was AI-generated and then submitted to a photography competition. It makes people think about whether the image is the point or the process of the image is the point of why people were upset that this photo won the competition. It also brings to question how far AI will go. Will AI take over everyday life, and will people misusing it cause issues not only when it comes to art but also when it comes to plagiarism and authenticity?
Photoshop caused a lot of controversy in the world because as magazines started doing this, it made people question what was real. Not only did people not know what was real, they also didn't know who or what to trust. Mia Fineman states in Faking It, "a minor alteration that triggered a cascade of anxious commentary about the status of photographic truth in the dawning age of digital imaging" (pg. 25). This text just proves the controversy that Photoshop brought to the table. This is still something that we see today, as everyone uses it on social media. Creating a sense of uncertainty.
