The University of Illinois will register you as a full-time student in a placeholder course for the term(s) that you are studying abroad for a total of 12 credit hours for Fall and Spring terms, or 6 credit hours for the Summer term. NOTE: MAP grant recipients may increase their credits to 15 hours for Fall and Spring terms in Student Self-Service, if needed. Registration in this study abroad placeholder will result in a tuition charge based at the Range III or Study Abroad rate (https://registrar.illinois.edu/tuition-fee-rates).
You will be AUTOMATICALLY enrolled in LAS 291/292 if you commit to your study abroad program.
Refer to your host institution for their course registration process.
Complete the Course Approval Summary Form and turn it in to the study abroad office in your home college (ex: LAS, ACES, FAA, etc.) during the semester you return to campus.
Some colleges require a completed course approval summary form BEFORE you go abroad. Please refer to the College Course Approval Instructions to make sure you follow your college's policies.
You will need to reference the Study Abroad Course database to see if the courses you plan to take have already been articulated for UIUC credit.
For complete instructions, CLICK HERE. Please refer to the instructions for your home college regardless of which study abroad program you are doing.
We highly recommend that you submit a tentative course approval form BEFORE you go abroad, especially if you need your study abroad courses to fulfill specific degree requirements or gen eds. It may also be required by your college.
Your records officer will use the final Course Approval Form you submit to determine how the course will transfer to UIUC (grade, credit/no credit, and the course equivalency). The transcript and credit recommendation will be sent to the Registrars Office for final processing. They will add the courses, credits, and grades to your permanent record. Please note that it could take up to three to six months for your final grades to appear on your DARS.
For fall abroad, the Course Approval form may be submitted anytime up until the first Friday in March and for spring abroad, up until the first Friday in October of the following semester. Note: It takes a bit of time to work through your course approval form and submit them to the Registrar once you send them to me. It then takes approximately six to eight weeks for study abroad credit to appear on student records from the date the Office of the Registrar receives the foreign transcript and course approvals.
Please make sure you know whether your host institution will send the transcript to UIUC automatically once grades are posted or if you need to request a transcript yourself.
If you need to request the transcript yourself, please have it sent in one of the following ways:
