The competent teacher understands and uses appropriate formative and summative assessments for determining student needs, monitoring student progress, measuring student growth, and evaluating student outcomes. The teacher makes decisions driven by data about curricular and instructional effectiveness and adjusts practices to meet the needs of each student.
According to the Standard 7 Assessment, The competent teacher understands and uses appropriate formative and summative assessments for determining student needs, monitoring student progress, measuring student growth, and evaluating student outcomes. The teacher makes decisions driven by data about curricular and instructional effectiveness and adjusts practices to meet the needs of each student. The test analysis project gave us the opportunity to learn more about this standard.
Performance Indicator 7J states: the competent teacher uses assessment results to determine student performance levels, identify learning targets, select appropriate research-based instructional strategies, and implement instruction to enhance learning outcomes. Analyzing our data from the class showed areas of strengths and weaknesses for each individual student, making it simple to come up with a personalized strategy for everyone in my class.
Performance Indicator 7M says the competent teacher maintains useful and accurate records of student work and performance. Using Google Forms as a test taking platform allowed me to create and Excel Spreadsheet with all of the data from each student. I can keep this record and look back on it as needed for the entire year I am with that student. By doing this, I am maintaining a more accurate record that I can keep permanently as opposed to a paper copy of a test that could get lost or ruined.
Performance Indicator 7N states the competent teacher accurately interprets and clearly communicates aggregate student performance data to students, parents or guardians, colleagues, and the community in a manner that complies with the requirements of the Illinois School Student Records Act [105 ILCS 10], 23 Ill. Adm. Code 375 (Student Records), the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) (20 USC 1232g) and its implementing regulations (34 CFR 99; December 9, 2008). After going over the data from my test, it is clear I can reach out to the student on an individual basis as well as contacting their parents or guardians. This type of project shows just how easy it is to monitor the academic records of your class as well as having proof for anyone that may ask IE- parents, guardians, or other school staff.
Overall, this was a great project giving us new teachers insight into how the professionals monitor, maintain, and analyze the data regarding their students academic records. Using Google Form as a tool in the classroom is an easy way for teachers to keep their data in one place while using it to inform students and parents about their classroom work. I will definitely be using this in the future for my classroom.
