Week 1 (Day 1)
I concentrated on building a professional appearance by upholding the essential aspects of professionalism on my first day at the childcare centre. I showed my dedication to the position by arriving early and making sure I was ready and correctly attired. I engaged with staff respectfully, introduced myself to all team members and I met with my ECT, who provided an orientation on the service’s protocols, including safety procedures and daily routines, underscoring the importance of accountability and adhering to the centre’s standards (Katz & Schon, 1978). By paying close attention to my mentor's directions and seeking clarification when needed, I worked on my ability to communicate effectively. It's important to establish good relationships with the children, so I took careful to treat them with kindness and tolerance to create an atmosphere of mutual respect and trust.
Breakfast was served at 9 a.m., and we assembled for toasted bread and fruits. In addition to providing food, this gives children a chance to grow socially as they interact, share, and express their preferences.
To improve their physical coordination, I observed them improving their motor abilities by picking up small portions of apples and holding bowls (AGDE, 2022). Throughout the day, I got the chance to watch how children interacted with other teachers and group leaders. As my group leader provided insights on the preferences and learning styles of each child, this observation emphasised the need of cooperation and teamwork. By acknowledging the distinct origins and requirements of every child, I started learning how to include cultural competency into my work while working with them (Hyland, 2010). Reflection on these observations will be critical in establishing responsive strategies as I continue my placement.
Soon it was time to eat lunch, which consisted of a healthy pasta meal topped with some vegetables and meat. I emphasised the value of individual accountability and helping to maintain a clean environment by asking them to place their plate in the sink after they had finished their meal. After the lunch, we stood on the mat and sang 3 songs together. This activity provided a joyful transition from mealtime to the next part of our day and helped create a sense of community among the children. It was almost 4pm and some of them parents were picking up their children while I sat down with rest reading them story.
At the end of the day, I engaged in a brief reflection with my fellow educators to discuss my initial observations and experiences. This reflective process emphasised the importance of responsiveness and adaptability in early education (Schon, 1983). After that I greeted all the children saying “bye” and reassuring them that I would come tomorrow and ask permission to leave to my supervisor and educators. This reflections of mine reinforces my understanding of the dimensions of professionalism, including commitment, accountability, ethical practice, cultural competence and collaboration.
