Artist's statement
Minnie Scott's figurative paintings, prints and drawings explore women's relationships to power, in the context of personal and historical memory. She creates 'taliswomen' – images of self-possessed, gleeful, untethered women – as sources of encouragement for herself and her viewers. Her recent work mines the depiction of witchcraft in cinema. Working from archival sources and film stills, as well as from life, she layers imagery to create palimpsests and double images in paint. As a portraitist, this approach allows her to explore and celebrate her sitters’ complexity and contradictions. She is also interested in the parallels between the sustained attention offered in both portrait-making and psychotherapy.
