There was an Old Man with a beard,
Who said, "It is just as I feared!—
Two Owls and a Hen,
Four Larks and a Wren,
Have all built their nests in my beard
In the orientation session, we were split up into six groups based on Edward Lear's six limericks. "An elderly man with facial hair was there." We began by sketching little pictures of the elderly man, picturing him with a big beard and birds perched on his head. Soon after spending days drawing on our own, we came up with a large collective drawing that captured the limerick in our minds. Subsequently, we were required to construct a 1:1 replica of our sketch. When creating the structure, our primary goal was to depict space—how the birds live inside their beards.
For our beard, we decided that coir ropes would best illustrate density and space. We had a hard time figuring out how to keep these ropes in order to create the feeling of home while we were building the structure. We were both bad at handling ropes, so it was a difficult week, but as we went along, it got easier. From sketching on A4 papers to constructing a full-size structure, the entire two-week process was delightful.
