This is a national company which employs over 3,000 employees. The company is in aviation mainly air traffic control and it needs to train existing operational staff. Moreover, it needs to train new hires in order to reach staffing requirements to run the business.

The training requirements for existing operational staff is completely different from the training that new hires receive.

Main courseware materials such as manuals, faciliation guides, and PowerPoints are all separately created using the Microsoft Office suite. All documents are housed within SharePoint which is like an online library where employees can check in and check out documents when editing.

The courseware produced by this company is quite complex as it is different per unit or department as each group has specific operational requirements.

The publication process for courseware takes a long time as each document has to be painstakingly checked for formatting and turned into PDFs one-by-one. This takes up a lot of time which prohibits employees within the training department to work on actual instructional design work for the courses.

Most subject matter experts have limited knowledge of using the existing content management system. The employees within the training department has to brief most subject matter experts how to use the Word documents to edit content and how to check in and check out their work. The majority of Subject Matter Experts do not have a lot of skills to use Microsoft Word.
