High school Math teacher in San Jose, California (2018 - 2020)
"My first-year TFA coach had a lot of teaching experience in high school math. I felt that our sessions were very focused on iterating different instructional ideas, but it was challenging to implement those when I still did not have a strong classroom culture. I would have wanted my coach to help me create a foundational classroom culture before diving deep into math instruction details"
High school science teacher in Richmond, California (2018 - 2020)
"I wish that my coach during my first year in the classroom asked me how I wanted to be coached. I felt like I went into our coaching sessions without a clear understanding of what we were going to work on and that made me feel anxious"
Elementary school SPED teacher in Richmond, California (2018 - 2020)
"My coach during my first year met me where I was. He intentionally asked me what "success" would look like for me and how he could best support me. We spent time getting to know one another before we even began coaching. He was good at saying, what does support look like for you? Do you want me to look at your pre-work? Observe generally and give glows & grows? This can change throughout the year and I can serve as a thought partner. What support was I already getting? At the time, I already had 2 other coaches, one from my school site and one from my credentialing program, I didn't want to spend time with him practicing a skill I was already working on with someone else. He was a good match for what I needed - because I didn't need much my first year. "
"This resource was like a choose your own adventure, which I think is really helpful for not just a coach, but as anyone working with first-year teachers. I would have really benefited from this website during my second year of teaching when I was supporting a new teacher, we could have looked at the different frameworks together and gotten to pick and choose what worked for us/her. I would have also appreciated looking at the testimonials to see what worked for other users and I could try different approaches and see what worked for them since each coaching experience is unique"
Elementary school multiple subjects teacher in Richmond, California (2018 - present)
"I would use this website to support a first-year teacher at my school who is facing challenges with classroom management. I think we would use a blend of the G.R.O.W model and Convu. I am excited to try this out with her as she navigates her first year. I am also excited to strengthen my coaching skills by learning about these different frameworks!"
