If you're wondering what all the buzz surrounding the words "vegan" and "plant based" are all about, you're not alone. Since I began my journey to a healthier me in 2009, I have spent a lot of time researching the best ways to not only keep the weight off, but live longer and the word "plant based" kept coming up.
In early 2017 after yet another family member was diagnosed with cancer, & I was suffering from the WORST cystic acne! All the prescriptions were just masking a deeper issue so I reached out to a naturopath doctor who began teaching me about the role the liver plays in relation to your skin. From there, I began some deeper research & one thing was for sure: you are what you eat when it comes to your skin! The inflammation on the inside was showing up on the outside in the form of cystic acne! My researsh also led me to learn that eating a diet that incorporates mostly unprocessed fruits, (leafy green) vegetables, whole grains and legumes is the key to warding off many common diseases and premature death.
I love food as much as the next person, but seeing so many people around me getting sick really got me wondering about what I put in AND on my body. Cancer is on the rise in a scary way.
Even the information from Cancer.gov itself is quite alarming:
Statistics at a Glance: The Burden of Cancer Worldwide
Cancer is among the leading causes of death worldwide. In 2012, there were 14.1 million new cases and 8.2 million cancer-related deaths worldwide.
The number of new cancer cases per year is expected to rise to 23.6 million by 2030.
Once I began my research, and read study after study, there was no turning back. I couldn't unlearn what I had learned and felt it was my obligation to myself and my future family to do what I could to not become part of that growing (SCARY) statistic.
I even read the book by the physician behind nutritionfacts.org titled How Not To Die and learned many ways to spice up my meals with plants and herbs that also help to ward off diseases.
I truly believe that knowledge is power & that we need to be informed in order to do what's best for our health and the health of those we love!
Although I am no longer vegan, I have learned the importance of eating more balanced meals and the best ways to do so in order to fuel your body properly and feel amazing.
Cancer SUCKS!
Missing you everyday, Gram. <3
Plant milks are a tasty alternative to cow's milk. If you need some reasons why you should make the switch, read this. The sooner you learn how clever the dairy industry has been at convincing us we need cow's milk, the sooner you'll be reaching for an almond or a cashew. :]
